BOTOX FOR MEN

ANTI-WRINKLE TREATMENT FOR MEN

The popularity of Botox is on the rise for men, these days anti-wrinkle treatment is a firmly established part of a man’s skincare routine.

The treatment plan for every client is customised to the individual according to the client’s facial anatomy and desired outcome. However, there are important differences when working with the male face, that must be integrated into the personalised approach.

The first consideration when treating the male face is the brow. The brow is fundamental to a masculine vs. feminine appearance. In our female clients we use anti-wrinkle injections to achieve a gentle arch and aim to have the brow sit higher, a few centimetres above the brow bone. This would look bizarre on a man’s face where a straighter and lower brow is more desirable. We modify our injection technique to respect this.

WHAT IS DIFFERENT ABOUT TREATING MEN’S FACES?

Men may also have, or desire, a wider and squarer jaw. Careful consideration of the anatomical lines that make up the male facial anatomy determine how we use injections to maintain or enhance such features.

Men often have higher hairlines, or an absent hairline. This demands an injection pattern that extends up into the scalp. Without treating higher towards the scalp, it is a job half done, and makes for a poor aesthetic result.

Generally speaking, men genetically carry a higher muscle mass than women throughout their body and the face is no exception. Men’s brows and foreheads are usually stronger and require as much as 50% higher dosage to fully relax the muscles and achieve a good result.

BOTOX® FOR MEN

The most common places men get Botox is:

  • in the corners of the eyes to prevent crow’s feet

  • between the eyebrows to target frown lines

  • in the forehead to reduce creases

  • around the mouth to target laugh lines

  • Lifting nose tips

  • Eyebrow raising

  • Jowl reduction and neck tightening

  • Hyperhidrosis (Excessive sweating)

  • Migraines

RECOVERY AND EFFECTS

Once the procedure is complete it will take about two weeks to kick in.  The effects of Botox are usually visible 1 to 4 days after the injection. Botox is a complex protein and takes time to start to work.  Don’t go to the gym or go out running on the day of your treatment and just take it easy for 24 hours.  After that just wait a couple of weeks and watch it start to work – it’s magic.

The effect of treatment generally lasts for 3 to 4 months. Once the effects start to decrease you can return to the practice to consult with our practitioner if you wish to maintain your new youthful look.

PRE-TREATMENT INSTRUCTIONS

  • Avoid excessive alcohol or medically necessary blood thinning medication before the treatment to prevent bruising.

  • Avoid herbal supplements such as Ginko, green tea and anti-inflammatories of any kind for 2 weeks following treatment to limit bruising.

AFTERCARE INFORMATION

  • For the first 4 hours following Botox, remain upright and periodically perform gentle facial movements in the areas of injections to work the Botox into the muscle - e.g., smile, squint, etc.

  • No rubbing or massaging of the injected area for 24 hours. Avoid facials and facial treatments for 2 weeks.

  • Do not participate in activities that include heavy lifting, vigorous exercise, or strenuous activities for 4 hours (it takes approximately 4 hours for Botox to bind to the nerve and you do not want to increase circulation during that time). Ideally no strenuous exercise for 24 hours after treatment.

  • Avoid headwear that is tightly fitted across the forehead.

  • Avoid excessive alcohol or medically necessary blood thinning medication to prevent bruising.

  • Do not take Ibuprofen, aspirin, or vitamin E for 24 hours after injection.

  • Try to avoid Make-up to prevent unwanted bacteria to the area treated but if this isn’t possible it may be applied gently, remember to wipe up and away from your eyes or brows.

  • Avoid using Irritating products (i.e., retinols, hyaluronic acid) for 24 hours following Botox.

  • If your upper lip was treated you will not be able to drink through a straw, whistle, or enunciate some words for approximately 2 weeks.

  • Bruising in the area injected is normal and often expected, especially if treated around the eyes. Bruising can last up to several weeks. Arnica may help diminish bruising.
